Pushing buttons is what Michael Gatti does for a living—literally. Gatti, now a National Defense Contractor, grew up on the border of Massachusetts and New Hampshire. Every artist has something that fuels their work, whether they draw from this inspiration consciously or unconsciously. Gatti says that an event that shaped him is 9/11. “It was my freshman year of high school when (9/11) happened, but I got to witness a lot of those dramatic changes that the world has gone through since then with youthful eyes. 9/11 definitely shaped me, my writing, my obsession with post-apocalyptic stories and a lot of my views were born that day.”
Another influential factor in both Gatti’s life and work is not an event, but the American singer and satirist Weird Al Yankovic. “I was obsessed with him for 12 years and he definitely is a big part of my sense of humor, my love for parody and satire and my refusal to grow up too much.”
The impression Weird Al had on Michael Gatti can be found within his books, whose general audience aims for younger readers, but is an enjoyable read for all. ‘Earth’s Best Friends’ is “a superhero anthology graphic novel. It focuses mostly on knee faction in the first volume, which is the Hyper Feline Ninja Heroes. But ultimately it is about various superheroes that have to come together to save the earth from the forces of evil.”
The idea for the novel came to Gatti through the combined forces of Saturday morning cartoons, anime, and superhero comics. “I’m inspired by just about everything from Dragon Ball Z to Powerpuff Girls. The Hyper Feline Ninja Heroes, for example, were inspired by a dream I had in third grade that I'm pretty sure was induced by watching an old anime called Samurai Pizza Cats.”
Gatti hopes that readers take from his novel the sense that they should, “never give up hope. Take responsibility for your actions and skills and other lightly sprinkled moral lessons. My hope is I have a book that is fun to read and engaging that gets readers pumped up for more.”
